The Plaza Theater, which was built in 1936 and seated 800 people, is no longer in operation, however, there are rumors of a restoration effort. According to legend, Greta Garbo sat in the back row of the theater when the 1930s masterpiece Camille debuted. At the intersection of East Tahquitz Canyon Way and South Palm Canyon Drive is the magnificent Welwood Murray Memorial Library. Most tourists stroll straight by Welwood, unaware that it is Palm Springs’ oldest intact civil structure, dating back to 1886. Dr. Welwood Murray constructed the city’s first hotel, which included a modest adobe building that served as a free library. In the late 1930s, when his son took over the property, he offered it to Palm Springs on the condition that it be used to house a free library. It serves the Palm Springs Historical Society and was recently refurbished. Visit for free tourist information and a look around the modest inside garden.

The Palm Springs Historical Society Museums demonstrate that this desert paradise is much more than the Rat Pack. The charming Village Green Heritage Center in the heart of Palm Canyon is a microcosm of it. It’s the parklike setting for the McCallum Adobe, a pair of 19th-century pioneer dwellings, and Miss Cornelia White’s “Little House,” among other museums. Inside the reconstructed adobe, there’s a historical display and a video about Palm Springs’ past.

The Architecture and Design Center, part of the Palm Springs Art Museum, is housed in a former bank building surrounded by urban desert landscaping. It is characterized as “the core of the museum’s research of architecture and design” and is always home to finely produced temporary exhibitions. Inside the former vault is a museum store with design publications and souvenirs. Even better, entry is completely free.

Only one bank of America branch in Southern California was designed by Le Corbusier, and it’s located on South Palm Canyon Drive. The design was inspired by Le Corbusier’s revolutionary chapel at Ronchamp, France, and was built by Victor Gruen Associates in 1959. (which had only been completed four years prior).

The tall, arching white roof appears to float above the predominantly white walls, which have blue tile on one side. Even if you’re not a regular client, the westward-facing floor-to-ceiling glass windows provide a cathedral-like vista of the mountains.

Although you can find Louis Vuitton in the desert, the best part of shopping in Palm Springs is finding unique items. Vintage is the king. While the desert is awash with thrift shops and consignment businesses, Revivals Resale Mart stands out for its extensive assortment of practically anything under the sun. The proceeds go to the Desert AIDS Project. There are other locations, but this is the original — and the vintage strip mall it anchors also has a healthy café frequented by Miley Cyrus and Suzanne Somers.
