A brief history of Puppetry of the Penis
Until today, most countries in the West have hosted puppetry of the penis with millions of people in more than 35 countries and 5 languages. Puppetry of the Penis was born when Simon Morley collaborated with a puppeteer David Friend. Their first performance at the 1998 Melbourne International Comedy Festival was recognized as “Best Overall Show”.
The name Puppetry of the Penis was originally named by comedy producer Simon Morley for a high-end art calendar. Released in 1997, the calendar showcases twelve of Simon’s favorite phallic installations, but the male genitalia displayed 12 months a year for most calendars is quickly becoming obsolete. Puppetry Of The Penis, the live broadcast was born and it was quickly realized it was really a duel, Simon’s natural choice of the partner being David “Friendy” Friend, who made a name for himself.

Their debut at the 1998 Melbourne International Comedy Festival was a resounding success, kicking off an eight-month tour of Australia. The national tour covers 20,000 km and is captured in the documentary Tackle Happy. Subsequent sell-offs in Sydney and Melbourne encouraged the boys to bring their gear to the 2000 Edinburgh International Fringe Festival, where they were beaten down by another sell-out.
When a West End producer realized the show’s potential (after going to a performance where the woman sitting next to him was laughing so hard), the world was no longer safe from the Art of Paper Folding. The contract and the mop were in place and an agreement was made immediately that the puppetry of the penis was on its way to London’s West End. The show, which ran for six months, delighted Londoners and A-list celebrities, including Hugh Grant, Naomi Campbell, Elton John, Bono and The Beckham’s. This was followed by a sold-out national tour of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

Next on their list is North America. Their domination campaign began with selling out for six weeks at the prestigious Festival Circuit in Montreal, before selling out in Toronto. Next was New York City with the show opening on 42nd Street and continuing for nearly 2 years. While there are 4 other companies already in the works, enjoy sold-out seasons in Chicago, Boston, LA and San Francisco.
The year finally ended with a memorable appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, one of the highest-rated shows of the year. For much of the next decade, the show continued to return with successful seasons in Australia, Great Britain, Canada and New Zealand, and the US, while conquering most of Europe and Scandinavia. In 2015, Genitalia Juggernaut continued to expand, setting up a flagship show in the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas. This show continued to run 5 nights per week and became as a Vegas bucket list show. In 2017, the “Vegas Show” will run from February to May to rediscover its roots on a tour around Australia, regularly performing shows in the UK and Canada and Europe, and of course 4 nights a week in Las Vegas.

What to expect?
The name of the show, Puppetry of the Penis, pretty much reveals what you’ll see there. There are two men standing on stage and doing what they call ‘origami’ with their genitals. There’s a humorous commentary that goes with every ‘trick’, be it the Wind Up, Atomic Mushroom, Pretty Simple Wrist Watch, The Snail, or their famous Puppet-shaped Hamburger.
These aren’t the only performances you’ll see. Flying Squirrels, Windsurfing, and the Loch Ness Monster are considered some of their tame habits in genital origami.
You might feel a little uncomfortable at first, but the performers do a great job of showing off the silly and hilarious instead of the weird or the creepy. The comedy script that accompanies the show will have you in parts, that is if you have a versatile sense of humor.

In an interview, Morley talked about his motivation to continue doing Penis Puppet: “We are about to honor the penis and liberate the male genitalia. Women and men have long been told to each other, ‘You can’t laugh at a man’s genitals. You will hurt his feelings. ‘ We said, ‘Not true!’ We made them three stories tall on a big screen and said, ‘Have a good laugh, old fashioned’.”
This type of scheme was banned in a small New Zealand city but when a group of conservative citizens filed a complaint about illegal behavior in Chicago, the police refused to stop it.
