The Poconos region has a long history dating back to the time before the towns were built. The Pocono Indian Museum near Bushkill preserves some of the histories of the area’s earliest occupants.

Many of the winter activities in Poconos have also seen significant changes. Mining, manufacturing, and industry, as well as railroading, have all had a long history. There are several locations to visit in the area to learn about a past that is very different from living in the Poconos now. The No. 9 Coal Mine & Museum offers a fascinating and informative tour that allows children (and adults) to view a genuine coal mine that has been kept largely undisturbed since operations were halted. There’s even a museum and a complete hoist shaft, also a museum packed full of mining artifacts.
